Kuwala Clean Energy is a Malawian social enterprise committed to ending energy poverty through affordable, community-driven solar energy solutions. We believe that no family should be left in the dark simply because they live off the grid.
Our Vision
Our mission is to expand access to clean, reliable, and affordable solar energy for rural and peri-urban communities across Malawi. By working with trusted local structures like Water Point Committees and offering flexible payment options, we are lighting up homes, empowering women and youth, and helping communities build resilience to climate change: one solar lantern at a time.
Our Impact So Far
We began our journey by testing our Minimum Viable Product (MVP) through the inaugural FAST (Fund for Alumni Start-ups in Transition) Idea Phase Program, supported by the Mastercard Foundation and the Anzisha Prize in partnership with the African Leadership Academy. This early phase helped us validate our business model, engage with early users, and refine our distribution and payment approach and build community trust.

Currently, with support from D-Prize, we are implementing our first full pilot in Havara Village. Our goal is to distribute at least 500 solar lanterns, reaching approximately 1,500 people with clean, affordable lighting, replacing harmful kerosene and transforming lives in these communities.
Our Solar products
At Kuwala Clean Energy, we offer high-quality Sun King solar lighting and home system products- available via our Buy Now, Pay Later (PAYGO) model- to serve the lighting needs of off-grid households.
- Compact and ultra-portable solar lantern providing up to 50 lumens (approximately 5× brighter than a kerosene lamp).
- Offers up to 72 hours of light on a single full charge from the sun.
- Built with a durable PET-laminated solar panel, lithium ferro-phosphate battery (425 mAh), and three adjustable brightness modes for versatile use.
- A multifunctional solar lantern delivering 160 lumens (up to 16× brighter than a kerosene lamp).
- Plays music and FM radio, charges mobile phones via universal 5 V USB port, and supports playback from SD cards or USB memory up to 32 GB.
- Provides up to 36 hours of light runtime (in low-power mode) and up to 9 hours of audio playback per sunny day. The rugged, water-resistant design with LED battery indicators ensures reliability in tough environments.
- A complete solar home system featuring two tube lights offering up to 400 lumens total—bright enough to illuminate an entire room with customizable brightness modes (turbo 200 lm, normal 120 lm, low 40 lm).
- Includes a 5 W polycrystalline solar panel, a 2,550 mAh lithium-ion NMC battery, and an integrated USB charging port (5 V/1.8 A).
- Features up to 30 hours of light runtime per charge, battery management technology for automated low-power transitions, and PAYGO technology compatibility with Sun King Link platforms
